The 12 000 books from Scotland arrive
Much excitement unfolded at The Bookery on 12 March due to the arrival of 12 000 quality children’s books!
This entire book drive, funding and shipment was organised by the The Old Barn in Scotland. The Old Barn is a beautiful and versatile space. It is also the home to the Scottish arm of The Bookery.
Funds for the book collection were raised primarily by the annual Book Stock event, where lovely people from all age groups and walks of life come together to enjoy bands, storytellers, dancing and great food.
Donated books came from Mitchell library in Glasgow, private donors, as well as secondary schools in the area.
Books which were unsuitable for school libraries or in poor condition were sold for one pound (R17), given to a local Scottish Charity bookshop, or recycled.
This is the second batch of books we have received from the Old Barn and it will definitely stand us in good stead for fully stocking three libraries in South Africa. Two of these libraries will be at Sivuyiseni Primary and Uumangaliso Primary in Khayelitsha. We are still to identify a high school for the remaining books.
A huge thanks to Claire Bell, coordinator extraordinaire, for working tirelessly to provide us with books of the highest standard. 2000 books have already been donated for next year’s batch!
